Less than 30 km from Cordoba, on the top of a hill, is the castle of Almodovar del Rio. A castle that already impresses from miles away.

Of Arab origin, construction of this castle began around the year 740. During the Islamic period it was enriched with walls and towers until it became an almost impregnable bastion. It took the Castilian monarchs five centuries to conquer it and turn it into a royal residence during their trips to Andalusia.

Throughout history, Almodóvar Castle has been of vital importance to all the civilisations that have inhabited it. Its strategic location, close to the city of Cordoba and next to the Guadalquivir River, has guaranteed the security of the capital of Cordoba for centuries.

Today it stands as an imposing medieval fortress on a hill over 250 metres high, with a mixture of Almohad, Mudejar and Gothic architectural styles.
