Day Trip to Riotinto Mines

An exciting journey to the heart of Huelva

Discover the legendary Riotinto Mines, a unique space in the interior of Huelva that seems to be taken from another planet. Here, the strong presence of materials such as copper and iron stain the reddish color of the Tinto River, making it one of the most unique landscapes on the planet.

These mines, exploited for 5,000 years, definitively changed the course of Huelva in the 19th century when the British established a colony here for their exploitation until 1954.

For years, NASA researchers have been studying the composition of its materials since they consider this place to be the most Mars-like biochemical environment on Earth.

We will start the morning visiting the Riotinto Mining Museum, where you will discover the history of one of the oldest mines in the world, its evolution, different tools, railway elements and other historical pieces. Afterwards, we will go into the interior of the Peña de Hierro Mine, where a 200-meter gallery will lead us through the interior of the earth until we reach a viewpoint with breathtaking views.

Back on the surface we will board one of the mining railway carriages for a wonderful train ride through the old mining areas and spectacular scenery.

Afterwards, we will head to a local restaurant to savour the local cuisine. After lunch, we will tour the Victorian neighbourhood of Bella Vista, visiting Casa 21, which preserves several elements of the way of life of those years.

We will finish this excursion to Riotinto visiting the Cerro Colorado viewpoint. A world mining reference, this impressive mine is one of the largest open pit mines in Europe and one of the largest deposits of massive sulfides on Earth.

During the whole excursion to Riotinto you will be accompanied by an expert guide and you will have a vehicle at your disposal.
