VISIT TO CIVIL WAR SHELTERS IN ALMERIA

War underground
Descend into the depths of Almeria to discover the shelters of the Civil War.

Visit to the Civil War shelters in Almeria

Discover a small city in the subsoil of Almeria

Between 1936 and 1939 a Civil War took place in Spain that pitted the democratic and republican state against the rebel side under the orders of General Francisco Franco. After the war, a dictatorship was imposed for almost 40 years.

Almeria remained for much of the war in the hands of the Republican government. The city was besieged by bombardments for long periods of time. Almeria was the target of 52 air and sea bombardments in which more than 754 bombs were dropped. With these data it is not surprising that Almeria had a system of tunnels that allowed the population to take refuge.

With this tour to the shelters of the Civil War in Almeria you will visit the galleries where the population took shelter every time the alarms sounded. You will learn about the history of this war in Almeria, the different areas of the shelters and how life was organized underground.

You will be able to visit about one kilometer of the more than four kilometers of total length of the subway galleries. You will visit recreated spaces such as the operating room, the warehouse or pantry, a private shelter and the connections with other tunnels that existed.

The shelters of Almeria are one of the largest and best preserved in Europe. It is estimated that around 40,000 people could take refuge there.
