Archaeological guided tour of the city of Cadiz

A more than 3,000 year old path through the oldest places in the city

The “silver cup” ( Cadiz) is considered to be one of the oldest cities in the West. That is why this tour pays more attention to know the oldest past of the city. Almost 3000 years have passed since its foundation as one of the most important cities in the West, so it is time to know its Phoenician, Roman and medieval remains.

On your tour you will visit the interior of the Roman Theater built by the sea in the first century B.C. It is the oldest theater and the second largest in the Iberian Peninsula. A theater facing the sea where magnificent plays were presented. We will visit its “cavea” (or bleachers) and part of its “orchestra” embedded between current buildings. We will also take a brief tour of its interpretation center to learn more about the archaeological details.

We will access an authentic salted fish factory where those famous products that were exported from Gades throughout the Roman Empire must have been manufactured. Here you will know the necessary spaces for the production of the “garum” that was exported from Cadiz to many parts of the Roman Empire.

One of the key stops will be the visit to the Museum of Cadiz. We will visit its Phoenician and Roman archaeology rooms to learn about the oldest material culture of Cadiz. There await us countless treasures that have emerged from the subsoil of Cadiz.

You will also walk through the Pópulo, the old medieval neighborhood of the city. From that period there are still remains of gates, walls and part of the urban layout that you will interpret with your local guide. It is also one of the most charming neighborhoods of Cadiz, so you will enjoy the walk through its narrow streets.
