Day trip to Sanlúcar de Barrameda
Fall in love with one of the most magical places in Andalusia.
On this excursion you will enjoy the best local gastronomy, you will learn about the history of a very special town and you will be able to sail next to the Doñana National Park. But, let’s go by parts.
We are in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, the place where the Guadalquivir River (the longest and most abundant in Andalusia) flows into the Atlantic Ocean. This town stands out for many things: its famous prawns, the unique wines with Manzanilla Denomination of Origin, the horse races on the beach, its seafaring culture, the proximity to the Doñana National Park and for being the starting point of the first round the world boat trip of Magellan and Elcano.
Strolling through its streets we will visit monuments such as the medieval castle of Santiago or some rooms of the Palace of Orleans-Borbon. You will also enter into the life of Sanlúcar through its streets, squares and even the Abastos market (closed on Sundays).
Sanlúcar is the origin of the famous “manzanilla”, a generous wine with a very old seafaring character. This wine has been known since at least the 18th century. For the wine to be considered Protected Designation of Origin Manzanilla de Sanlúcar, it must be aged in the local cellars, with the system of criaderas and soleras and under flor de velo. All this will be told to you by an expert oenologist who will guide you through a distinguished winery.
At noon you will have reserved a table for lunch in another of the iconic places of this town, the neighborhood of Bajo de Guía. It is an old fishing village of the nineteenth century that today is a benchmark of gastronomy in Andalusia. On the beach of Sanlúcar is celebrated every year a horse race that concentrates a great expectation.
The Doñana National Park will always be present in your visit, as the protected area begins on the other bank of the Guadalquivir. You will have the option of taking a boat trip up the river to get a closer look at the National Park. The tour lasts 1 hour and can be done in an inflatable boat (zodiac type) or a modern motorboat.

Boat trip on the Guadalquivir River
The finishing touch to complete your private visit to Sanlucar de Barrameda will be a boat trip (zodiac type) at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River. You will sail along the calm waters of the estuary, next to the shore of the Doñana National Park. You will also pass by the famous port of Bonanza, where the fishing boats that catch the prized prawns of Sanlúcar set sail from. Before boarding, you will walk through Bajo de Guía and visit the old “Fábrica de Hielo” (Ice Factory), today converted into an interpretation center about the history of Sanlúcar and Doñana. This optional activity lasts approximately two hours: guided tour (1 hour) and the boat ride on the Guadalquivir (1 hour).
WARNING: Sanlúcar does not have a pier, so to board the boat you have to get on board from the shore of the beach, so you have to take off your shoes and get your feet wet.
