Baños de la Encina is a charming Andalusian village. With a simple stroll through its streets you can admire the mark of history. Baños de la Encina also boasts a first-class archaeological site and one of the most impressive fortresses in Spain, which for years was the frontier between Muslims and Christians.
On this tour of Baños de la Encina you will enjoy a guided visit through its historic buildings. Throughout the visit we will make a gastronomic stop to taste locally produced extra virgin olive oils of excellent quality.
The historic centre of Baños de la Encina was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1969. Today it is on the list of the most beautiful villages in Spain. A visit to the hermitage of Jesús del Llano and its famous baroque chapel is a must. It is a masterpiece of Andalusian Baroque that will leave you amazed.
You will enter the famous fortress of Burgalimar. This castle of Andalusian origin was built in the 10th century and played a key role in the wars for the control of Andalusia in later centuries. It was the scene of epic battles between Christians and Muslims.
For lunch we will reserve a table for you in a restaurant where you can taste very authentic products such as ‘carne de monte’ (bushmeat). Baños de la Encina is located next to the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park and has a rich game fauna.
After lunch, and as a perfect complement, you will have the option of a pleasant hiking route along the Rumblar reservoir (7 km). This route will take you to your next stop, the archaeological site of Peñalosa.
The ruins of a settlement dating back 4000 years are preserved in Peñalosa. It belongs to the Argar culture, considered to be the first urban civilisation in the western Mediterranean. The main activity of this settlement was mining, as we are in an area with impressive concentrations of minerals.
